Visitor Policy

The University has significant limitations on the number of visitors to campus during the Fall 2020 semester. Research requests by non-ND-affiliates will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, per the University’s Campus Visitors Policy.

Services Status

In-person access to Hesburgh Library is limited to current members of Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s, and Holy Cross College communities. View hours.

Borrow & Request Materials

  • Browse & Check Out Physical Materials

    The general collection stacks in Hesburgh Library are limited to current members of Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s, and Holy Cross College communities.

    Use our many low-contact services, including:

    • Self check machines located on the 1st and 10th Floors
    • Self service hold shelf
    • Book return
    • Zoom Ask Us Desk: Get walk-up virtual help in real time, Monday to Friday 9:00am – 5:00pm.
    • Review Mobile scanning app options

    If you need in-person assistance, please contact us by phone or email, or by using the Zoom Ask Us Desk. If in-person assistance is required after a virtual consultation, a staff member will come out to the service desk.

  • Document Delivery

    Notre Dame-affiliated patrons may submit requests for article or book chapter scans through the Document Delivery request forms. Requests for physical circulating materials can be made through the library catalog.

    Users are limited to 10 open requests at any time.

    Department Delivery of requested items via Campus Mail is unavailable until further notice.

    Same day pick-up is not available. Materials will undergo a quarantine period in accordance with our evidence-based materials handling procedures. If you need same day access to material, please retrieve items from the shelves and use self check out options.

    Select a pickup location (see details below). You will receive an email notification when your request is ready.

    For Hesburgh Library pickups, please go to the Self Service Hold Shelf near the North Entrance of Hesburgh Library. Select your bagged materials, and proceed to the adjacent self-check machine to check each item out.

    Architecture Library is not currently a pickup location. Please select Hesburgh Library as your pickup location and plan to retrieve your items from the Hesburgh Library Self Service Hold Shelf. As a reminder, Walsh Family Hall is only accessible to Architecture faculty and staff.

    Business Library is only a pickup location for faculty, staff and graduate students with mailboxes in Mendoza — materials will be delivered to mailboxes. All others should select Hesburgh Library as your pickup location and plan to retrieve your items from the Hesburgh Library Self Service Hold Shelf.

    Music Library is only a pickup location for members of the Department of Music, and you must schedule an appointment to retrieve your materials. Please email musiclib@nd.edu for an appointment.

    Document Delivery scan requests will adhere to copyright guidance provided by General Counsel.

  • Federal Depository Library Program Access

  • Interlibrary Loan

    Requests for scans of articles and book chapters may be made through the Interlibrary Loan request forms. Please note: You may experience longer than usual fulfillment times.

    Borrowing physical books and other physical materials through Interlibrary Loan has resumed. Please note: Cancellation rates are currently higher due to lower availability from lending institutions.

  • Medieval Institute & Byzantine Studies Materials

    Medieval Institute General Collection open stacks can be accessed anytime the Hesburgh Library building is open.

    Medieval Institute reference collection materials may be accessed by all students, faculty, and staff in-person for book retrieval or a quick reference check that does not require a seat between 8:00am and 5:00pm Monday to Friday. The doors to 714 (Byzatine/Classics and Near Eastern Reference) and 715 (Medieval Reference, Paleography, Universities, and Ambrosiana collections) are unlocked during this time.

    Those who wish to use a seat for an extended visit between 8:00am and 5:00pm Monday to Friday must reserve a seat online.

  • Rare Books & Special Collections Materials

    Access digital collections and other online materials at rarebooks.library.nd.edu.

    Notre Dame students, faculty, and staff can request appointments to access the Rare Books & Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room. Please email Rare Books & Special Collections or University Archives for research and course support or to make an appointment.

    Research requests by non-ND-affiliates evaluated on a case-by-case basis, per the University’s Campus Visitors Policy.

  • Renewals & Recalls

    Please log in to My Account on the library website to review and renew items.

    • Books that have been recalled/requested cannot be renewed and must be returned by the due date.
    • Books that have been marked lost, if they have since been found, can be returned for a credit or refund.
    • University IDs that have expired must be renewed through the Campus Card Office to reinstate library privileges.
    • If you are leaving Notre Dame (graduation, new employment, etc.), Hesburgh Libraries and/or Interlibrary Loan material cannot be renewed and is due by the due date.
    • The ability to recall items has been reinstated.
  • Return Materials

    Library materials may be returned to Hesburgh Library book returns located near the Library Circle entrance, the Circulation desk, and the North Entrance doors Monday to Thursday from 9:00am – 6:30pm and Friday 9:00am – 5:00pm.

    Contact circ@nd.edu to make arrangements for returning 30 or more books.

    Please note: Returned material will not be removed from your library account immediately. All returned library materials will undergo a quarantine period in accordance with our health and safety guidelines.

  • St. Joseph County Public Library Partnership

    Notre Dame, Saint Mary's, and Holy Cross students, faculty, and staff who reside in St. Joseph County, including undergraduate students living on campus, can sign up for a St. Joseph County Public Library card by visiting any SJCPL location. They may also apply for an SJCPL Digital Card online.

    Due to COVID-19, the Hesburgh Libraries have currently suspended issuing SJCPL cards and checking out SJCPL books at the Hesburgh Library Circulation Desk.

    SJCPL items can be returned to the book returns at Hesburgh Library, Monday to Thursday from 9:00am – 6:30pm and Friday 9:00am – 5:00pm, or any St. Joseph County Public Library location.

    For more information, please contact SJCPL or circ@nd.edu. SJCPL items returned at the Hesburgh Library will undergo a three-day quarantine and will not be discharged from your account immediately upon receipt.

  • University Archives Materials

  • Graduate Student Lounge

    Study and lounge space for graduate students only. Accessible with ID card.

    Graduate students using the lounge are encouraged to routinely sanitize the space using cleaning products provided.

  • Meeting & Event Spaces

    Reserve a study room.

    Due to the space required for physical distancing, study rooms have limited capacity. Seats are marked with green “Sit Here” stickers, placed according to social distancing guidelines. Please do not add or remove chairs.

  • Study Seats: Reserve a Seat

    Reserve study seats throughout Hesburgh Library. Hesburgh Library first floor seats and computer stations are walk-in use only and cannot be reserved.

    Seats, rooms, and computers may be reserved up to two weeks in advance.

    You must check in for your reservation within the first 15 minutes of your reservation, or your seat will be released for other people to reserve.

    To check in, scan the QR code or visit https://libcal.library.nd.edu/r/checkin and enter your confirmation code.

    Please leave immediately if someone arrives with an existing reservation.

    All seating and computer stations have been arranged with care to accommodate social distancing. In some cases, table top plastic barriers are used for space separation. Please leave tables and chairs in their original arrangement.

  • Sound Studio
